Georgia’s 8th Annual Cervical Cancer Awareness Day commenced with more than 30 healthcare professionals, legislators, and members from various sponsoring organizations. The Hispanic Health Coalition of Georgia (HHCGA), one of the major sponsors of the event, was represented by Shirley “Bella” Borghi as Vice Chair and Executive Director.
Following a warm welcome to the in-person attendees and those participating online, Triana James introduced three state legislators and a state senator. These officials emphasized the importance of the awareness day and recognized the accomplishments of everyone involved in cancer prevention. Dr. Robert Bednarczyk from the Emory Rollins School of Public Health was introduced as the event moderator. He outlined the main purpose and theme for the day.
Cervical cancer is preventable and curable if detected early and managed effectively. Despite this, it remains the fourth most common form of cancer among women worldwide. Hence the relevance of the opening question: “Before today, have you heard about plans for cervical cancer elimination?”
The goal, as set by the World Health Organization, is to eliminate cervical cancer by achieving and maintaining an incidence rate of below 4 per 100,000 women.

Dr. Dilley shared insights from her experience caring for patients with cervical cancer and other female cancers. She presented several slides with data highlighting cervical cancer rates in Georgia, noting that incidences are disproportionately higher among women of color.
She also emphasized that while vaccines and screenings have reduced cervical cancer rates in the state, mortality rates have plateaued over the past two decades.

Dr. Goedken delivered a powerful keynote address, sharing her vision of making cervical cancer “a thing of the past.” She highlighted a graph from Dr. Dilley showing that cervical cancer has dropped off the top ten list of all cancers.
Dr. Goedken also discussed the groundbreaking FDA approval of the first self-test collection kit for HPV, describing it as a game changer in overcoming barriers to screening. Additionally, she stressed the significance of the HPV vaccine, stating “it might be the safest, best tolerated, and most effective vaccine of all time.”

Recognition and awards were presented to representatives from sponsoring organizations and community champions who have significantly contributed to cervical cancer awareness and prevention.
The event concluded with a call to action, urging continued advocacy and legislative efforts to eliminate cervical cancer. The ongoing commitment to raising awareness and improving access to prevention and treatment remains vital.
